Industry 4.0 Key Components – Part 4

In today’s Industry 4.0 post, let’s look at some of the Industry 4.0 key components. Whether these components fit into your scenarios, or you need to consider others is dependent on your business case. For example, you may want to include cloud computing in your solution, but if your factory needs to be able to run in full isolation in the event of a network or power grid failure, then you can’t be dependent on cloud solutions, you need to use edge computing or local cloud instead. We’ve selected 5 components you should evaluate for your Industry 4.0 solution.

Industrial IoT as an Industry 4.0 Key Component

Industrial IoT is a term we’ve referenced in past articles in this series. What is it? Industrial IoT refers to the integration of internet-connected sensors, instruments, and other devices (the internet of things) with factory applications. This enables real-time data collection, analysis, and decision-making, which can be used to improve processes and operational efficiency. By connecting machines and systems, it allows for predictive maintenance, which in turn reduces downtime, and enhances productivity in your factory.

Augmented Reality

Industry 4.0 Key Components

Augmented Reality refers to the use of digital information in conjunction with the physical setting of the factory to enhance the processes your workers are using. Equipped with augmented reality devices, workers will be able to access real-time data, get visual aids and instructions, and access 3D models. This allows opportunities for real-time, on the spot training, along with greater accuracy and efficiency of operation.

The Role of Big Data & Analytics in Industry 4.0

A factory full of IoT devices is producing data in vast quantities. Big data and analysis solutions can ingest this data to identify patterns, trends and insights, leading to optimized processes. The data can also be used to do predict future outcomes using data-driven decisions.

Cloud Computing in Industry 4.0

Cloud computing solutions allow this mass amount of data at the factory level to be stored and processed in the cloud, allowing for easy access and sharing for companies with national or global distribution and reach. Data is accessible on demand from anywhere in the world. Cloud computing allows for use of software-as-a-service solutions and can be utilized to greatly increase redundancy and resiliency of your systems.

Digital Twins

Digital twinning allows you to build a complete digital model of your factory and connect it to all your actual live data sources. The digital twin of your factory can then be used to model alternate scenarios and test them as if they were running directly in your factory, without the risk or cost of implementing them in the factory before knowing the outcomes.

The Industry 4.0 key components are necessary to understand because it gives you a better sense of how Industry 4.0 can benefit your organization. If you’re looking for more information about Industry 4.0, get in touch by filling out the form at the bottom of the page.

These are some of the most important pieces of the Industry 4.0 factory in our view. We could also have considered AI and machine learning.
