Beyond Document Management: SharePoint as a Strategic Business Platform
September 25, 2025
SharePoint’s Evolution
SharePoint was once primarily known as a document management system (think digital filing cabinet). There is a chance that you still think about it in this way. Microsoft SharePoint has evolved into a strategic business platform that helps with collaboration, communication, and digital transformation across organizations. SharePoint has become a hub for encouraging productivity.
Building a SharePoint page is surprisingly simple. Whether you have a background or experience in tech, it really has no impact on your ability to build out an effective SharePoint pages (or pages) for your organization.
SharePoint as a Digital Workplace Foundation
Modern SharePoint sites serve as intelligent intranets, connecting employees to the tools, content, and people they need.
I recently built a Sales SharePoint site for Improving where salespeople can access all sales and marketing related material. This site makes it easier for them to locate relevant material, which positively impacts our seller’s ability to make sales and provide clients or potential clients with relevant material.
With SharePoint, you can create:
- Personalized dashboards and news feeds
- Departmental hubs and team sites
- Embedded Power BI reports
- Mobile-friendly access for remote and frontline workers
It can quickly become the backbone of your organization. It is so much more than just a digital filing cabinet.
Process Automation with Power Platform Integration

SharePoint’s synergy with Power Automate, Power Apps, and Power BI allows organizations to build low-code solutions directly within their SharePoint environment. Some examples of work we have done are:
- Automated approval workflows for inventory management
- Custom forms for data collection and reporting
- Real-time dashboards for operational insights
Manual tasks become automated, allowing you to devote more time to projects that matter. You get access to better data, which leads to better decision making and more impactful decisions for your organization. This is why it’s important to reframe your perspective on what SharePoint is and what it can offer. It’s an incredible tool when used correctly and intentionally.
Knowledge Management & Enterprise Search
SharePoint’s metadata tagging, content types, and Microsoft Search capabilities make it a powerful tool for knowledge management. Organizations can create centralized knowledge bases, surface relevant content using AI search, and enable cross-site content discovery.
SharePoint can be used as a strategic asset for organizational intelligence.
Governance, Security & Compliance
With built-in compliance features, role-based access controls, and audit trails, SharePoint supports enterprise-grade governance. SharePoint can help your organization meet regulatory requirements and protect your most sensitive data. It can also manage content lifecycle policies.
SharePoint allows people to securely collaborate, making it an effective tool when safety is a top priority for your organization.
SharePoint as a Launchpad for Innovation
If you pride yourself on being a forward-thinking organization, using SharePoint’s features can help you launch internal innovation portals. It can also help you crowdsource ideas from your employees. If the encouragement is there, people are more likely to contribute new ideas.
SharePoint helps promote a culture of innovation. Many people think of SharePoint as a tool, but it so much more than that. It can really help your organization transform and become more organized.
Rethinking SharePoint’s Role
It’s time to reframe your thoughts around SharePoint. It is a business enabler. It is a business transformer. It encourages growth and innovation and protects your most sensitive documents. SharePoint is powerful. Don’t let it go to waste.
