Correlating Financial Data With Donor Data Enables New Insights and Analysis

The advancement services department of a Canadian university was frustrated with its limited reporting capabilities. They needed a solution that could efficiently produce reports while keeping their sensitive data secure so that they could provide more frequent and detailed donor updates. They re-engaged Imaginet to help them automate the addition of financial data to their existing data warehouse that contained donor information.

The accounting system of the university provides financial data (such as expenditures and fund market values) via system-generated reports in the form of CSV or Microsoft Excel files, which are delivered through email. The Imaginet Business Intelligence team built a Logic App to manage the email attachments to save the files in Azure Data Lake Storage for processing. As this data may contain sensitive information, storing it within an Azure Data Lake provides additional levels of security. Azure Data Factory transforms the financial data files to move them into the data warehouse. With updated, accurate financial data in the data warehouse, we created a Power BI data set the department can use to deliver endowment reports and view data on demand. Our team also provided specialized training for the ongoing development of Azure Data Factory processing and Power BI data set management.

Imaginet’s unique financial management expertise helped deliver a dynamic solution for the client that can be used for other types of data as well. The updated system is user-friendly and easy to manage, and the correlation of financial data with donor data allows the client to find insights that weren’t previously available. With the enhanced data set, the department can offer a new level of immediacy and understanding of how their financial data correlates to donations.

Our team has been working hard to deliver exceptional results, and we are thrilled to share our success with you. Don’t forget to subscribe to our newsletter to stay updated on our most recent Microsoft 365 projects.
